Children 'Spend 1 year in front of screens by the age of 7'

First News is a great alternative to TV and computers as it helps get children away from these screens. It also helps to foster interest in other aspects of life and encourages children to engage and discuss more and more topic areas with their parents.

A recent article in Metro highlighted the fact that youngsters spend an average of 6.1 hours a day on a computer or watching TV - with some ten and 11-year-olds having access to five screens at home!

Parents have been warned to 'regain control' of their households after children spending too much time in front of screens was linked to a significantly increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

'Technology should be a tool, not a burden or a health risk,' psychologist Dr Aric Sigman will tell the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health annual conference in Glasgow.

'Whether children or adults are formally "addicted" to screen technology or not, many of them overuse technology and have developed an unhealthy dependency on it.'

Parents who constantly check and use their smartphones and iPads while youngsters are around may also be adding to their children's overuse of the small screen, he added.
